Washing at 40°C Is Sometimes the Better Choice
Fresh laundry at a normal temperature? Definitely. Here’s why 40°C can be the smarter option.

Cold washes are great for everyday laundry — especially with modern detergents. But sometimes you notice that clothes don’t feel completely fresh. That has less to do with the temperature and more with what gets left behind in the fibers.
Clothes build up a lot throughout the day: sweat, oils, deodorant, sunscreen, bacteria. At 30°C, these don’t always dissolve fully. The laundry looks clean, but deep in the fabric something stays behind. After a while you’ll recognise it instantly: shirts that smell musty, sportswear that never feels truly fresh, towels that start to stink faster.
That’s where 40°C makes a difference.
Not hot, not harsh — just warm enough to break down oils and odours. It’s the temperature where detergent enzymes work at their best and your clothes actually get clean again.
And no, 40°C doesn’t wear out your clothes faster. Wear and tear usually comes from high spin speeds, overfilled drums or too much detergent. The temperature itself is rarely the issue. The majority of fabrics are designed for 40°C.
When is 40°C the smarter choice?
Sportswear, towels, bedding, shirts with deodorant buildup, clothes that start to smell musty. Anything that’s worn intensively.
The takeaway: cold washing is good, but smart washing is better.
40°C helps your clothes stay fresh for longer — without overkill, without rewashing, without hassle.
